ENJOYING & PROTECTING HAWAII'S PRECIOUS CORAL REEFS

Our website is about enjoying Hawaii's coral reefs and their inhabitants, and how to protect them. Hawaii's reefs are being decimated by fish collectors (capturing reef fish for the home aquarium trade) and other coral damage caused by humans.

LARSENS BEACH CLEANUP WITH SURFRIDER KAUAI

Sunday my husband and I helped with the Larsen's Beach cleanup with Surfrider Kauai.
We started at 9AM by finding a plastic net hanging in a tree. My husband cut it down and we bagged it. Soon, a group of volunteers were working on a large fish net partially buried near the shore further down the beach. We jumped right in to help. (That's him in the middle with a white t-shirt and a hat on). Fishing nets scrape the bottom as they are dragged along the shore, damaging and killing coral and other marine life. Monk Seals, Seaturtles and Seabirds have been known to become entangled in this type of debris and die.
We didn't stop until the entire net was uncovered and carried up the hill to be disposed of.
We also picked up plastic bottles and any other trash along the shore. We are signed up for regular Net Patrol all around Kauai. Here's a picture of the load of trash cleaned up from just our end of the beach, there was much more. After the cleanup we went for a refreshing swim on our clean beach. Good work everyone!
